Since then, 3Destruct has been exhibited in Mexico, Russia, Switzerland and France.

In the summer of 2013 we were invited by the Berlin Atonal festival to present the piece at the Kraftwerk berlin, a former power station in Berlin’s Mitte. Disused in 1997, this piece of Berlin’s industrial history which used to power the former East regions of the city, is now converted in an exhibition and event space. During our scouting visit we were immediately seduced by this cathedral of concrete where giant pilasters and steel girders create a scenery of post industrial uchronia. The ideal set for a piece such as 3Destruct.

Thanks to a high standard an uncompromising music programming the event was a real success.
Murcof + Simon Geilfus’s live performance, another project of the Antivj label, was also presented during the festival.
We are taking this opportunity to present you this new take on the installation, and to announce that 3Destruct will be back in Berlin, this time at the Opernwerkstaetten, from April 10th to May 25th 2014 during Photography Playground.

After some complicated preparations by email, everything finally went well a few days before the event: Departure from Paris at 4AM the day after christmas, with Aalto [studiovj], “visuals companion” for this week in Germany.

We arrive a day before the beginning of the event, which makes things a lot easier to locate and explore the different venues: Avit is held in the city centre, at M12 (a very nice bar / gallery with projectors and screens, managed by Visomat), and also at the Bcc, a udge building, which hosts at the same time the 23C3 conference , a big event dedicated to hacking and geeks All that contributes to a quite particular environment, with Wifi routers taped on the walls, nerds sitted in the corridors, 8bit art exhibitions and LEDs sculptures..

The VJ lineup was rather interesting, with VJs from many nationalities, demos and workshops, software and hardware presentations, even if most of the VJ sets were quite “traditional” (multi-layer + effects) it was great to finally meet familiar names from VJforums and VJfrance, and hook up for the Visual Jam at club couch (that I missed) , and at  C-Base afterparty.

Among the highlights of this festival, lots of very good things happened at M12:
- Tagtool: A live drawing installation, with a pen tablet and some faders to control different parameters   such as coulours, transparency, or motion.. Definitely very interesting for the “live” and spontaneous aspects.
- Aalto vjset: a beautiful set again, 100% of self produced visuals, with a very personal style, scientist mix of Aftereffects, hand drawings and vectorial 3D, the whole thing with a very special colour choice and ambiance. Macbook + UC33 and padKontrol. Demos and samples of his work are available here.
- Multitouch screen: Demo of a big touchscreen which supports many fingers at the same time. A relatively simple technique (Projector / Perspex screen, infrared LEDs + infrared video camera) which is promised to a beautiful future, especially in the development of the next generation of user interfaces, and also in the field of art without any doubt. (like the reacTable project).
- Telematique: abstract VJing, beautiful work on the light / images combo. Sven Gareis uses a neons installation on a white screen, DMX controlled, and he also projects images on this special screen, with video feedback effects which generated some glitchy visual “echo”, and very minimal and contrasted images, a very nice plastician work.
- Vixid: Presentation of their new 16 inputs video mixer , developped in partnership with some Vjs: A nice intuitive interface, reliable high quality hardware, not that much “crap classical VJing effects from the 90′s” compared to the old V4 (that will quickly endup in a bin ! Xray was betatester and also cameraman.
Only negative point I can see, the IN/OUTputs are mainly composite (the worst quality standart you can ever get, invented in 1953) and svideo, but no DVI, SVGA, HDMI yet or any other standard from our century. 
- Vjing course: presentation  by Pavel Mrkaus of a new Uni course abouut live visuals and visual arts.
- Spark: A/V from Toby (avit uk) with apparently a great work on the narrative side of images (unfortunately I’ve only seen a few minutes of it as I was working on my set..).

I was supposed to play at the Bcc (rhythmic projections outside the building) but even if the calibration and tests went well the day before, we had to change the plans at the very last minute, and I finally did a short A/V set at M12. Here’s a short extract from my set:

Après des préparatif par email un peu compliqués, tout fini par s’arranger à quelques jours du festival: Départ de Paris à 4h du mat le lendemain de noël, avec Aalto [studiovj], compagnon de ce séjour Teuton
Nous arrivons donc une journée avant le début du festival, ce qui permet de repérer les lieux: Avit se déroule en plein centre, à la fois au M12 (gallerie / bar orientée visuels, tenue par Visomat), et au Bcc, un immense batîment qui acceuille en même temps la conférence 23C3, un évênement dédié aux hacking et aux geeks Tout ça contribue à une ambiance bien particulière, avec des routeurs Wifi scotchés au murs, des nerds assis dans les couloirs, des sculptures de LEDs programmables..

La programmation VJing était assez interessante, avec des Vjs de nombreuses nationalités, des démos, workshops, présentations de logiciel.. même si on retrouvait beaucoup de VJing “classique” (multi-layers et effets), mais de très belles rencontres et de bon moments (notamment la Jam au club couch, que j’ai ratée, et l’after party au C-Base).

Parmi les highlights de ce festival, beaucoup de choses vraiment bien au M12:
- Tagtool: Un système de dessin en temps réel, avec une palette graphique et des faders pour controler différents paramètres, comme la couleur, transparence, ou le mouvement des éléments dessinés.. Un côté “live” et spontanné vraiment interessant.
- Aalto vjset: Encore un très bon mix, avec 100% de production et un style bien personnel, savant mélange d’Aftereffects, de dessin et de 3D vectoriel, le tout avec un choix de couleur et d’ambiance original. Macbook + UC33 et padKontrol. Des extraits de son travail sont disponibles ici.
- Multitouch screen: Démonstration d’un écran tactile réactif à plusieurs doigts simultanément. Un procédé finalement realtivement simple (Projecteur / Plexi, LEDs + caméra infrarouge) mais qui est promis à un bel avenir dans le dévelopement des prochaines générations d’interfaces utilisateurs, et dans le domaine de l’art sans aucun doute (comme le projet reacTable).
- Telematique: Vjing abstrait, travail sur la lumière et les images. Sven Gareis utilise une install de néons, controllés en DMX, et des projections sur cette install, avec des effets de feedbacks vidéo qui génèrent de l’écho visuel, et des visuels très minimaux et contrastés, avec un beau travail plastique.
- Vixid: Présentation d’un nouveau mixer vidéo 16 entrées, développé en collaboration avec des Vjs: Une interface de qualité, intuitive, un hardware fiable et puissant, pas trop d’effets classiques “cheaps”.. en tout cas un produit qui envoie directement la V4 à la poubelle ! Xray caméraman.
Seul point négatif, des entrées / sorties du siècle dernier: composite (le pire standard de qualité existant, datant de 1953) et svidéo, mais pas encore de DVI, SVGA, HDMI ou autres standards actuels.
- Formation au Vjing: présentation par Pavel Mrkaus d’une nouvelle filière universitaire axée sur les visuels en temps réels.
- Spark: Set A/V de Toby (avit uk) avec apparement un beau travail sur le côté narratif des images (je n’ai malheureusement aperçu que quelques images en préparant mon set).

Pour ma part, je devait jouer au Bcc (projections rythmiques en extérieur) mais malgrès les préparatifs réussis, des soucis de dernière minute ont changé les plans, et j’ai donc fait une mini presta audio-visuelle au M12, pour la clotûre du festival. Petit extrait vidéo de mon set:

Farouche anti-myspace au début, j’ai fini par essayer (attention, bugs sous firefox) pour voir, et à me prendre au jeu, l’interet premier étant de pouvoir joindre de nombreux artistes habituellement injoignables, et de se faire des contacts à l’étranger.. Malheureusement, l’interface de myspace étant un non-sens, impossible de rajouter des dates si le profil n’a pas été créé en “Band profile”, et trop tard pour revenir en arrière.

Je me suis donc créé un petit fichier flash pour afficher et raffraichir automatiquement les dates à venir, plus un petit formulaire de contact pour les bookings..
