Arkaos – midi detector – English Version

Arkaos – midi detector – English Version

A special Post dedicated to Arkaos users who works with MIDI.

This very useful protocol, lets you control your visuals (launch clips, effects parameters..) otherwise than using your mouse and computer keyboard (default devices), and allows the use of any MIDI controller (keyboard, knobs and faders devices, but also theremyn, midi violin, midi glove, even your Wiimote) to pilot Arkaos.

Unfortunately for Arkaos users like myself, the soft doesn’t include any “auto assign” functionality, and then it makes things really difficult when you have to assign a fade or an effect  to a #CC value (like knobs and faders) manually.

Especially since default “#CC” MIDI mapping can be completly random, like it was on my Edirol PCR-30 keyboard when I bought it, and it was a real painI  to try manually every #CC value in arkaos and then draw a little sketch to remember the values.
Later on, I discovered how to change the default mapping to something a lot more coherent, (I’ll blog a tutorial soon).

But I found a way with flash, and some technical help from Matthieu [arkaos], to listen to the MIDI port, and detect the #CC values in real time. This little tool is very useful to get automatically the knobs and faders adresses, from any connected MIDI Device.
This can be really handy for the first mappings, or when you have to install a new keyboard just 15 mins before a show :)

This tool is a small swf file available here: http://www.antivj.com/arkaos/
(it’s called “midi_signals.swf” ).

You just have to import it into arkaos (drag n’ drop on any key), and play the file (latch it to keep the values on screen) to see which midi value is being modified when you use your controler (make sure that your device is connected and active).

As a bonus, it also gets the input volume as a variable, and calculates the BPM (Make sure that BPM is activated in Arkaos settings, and that it generates 7 / 8 events ). More functionalities soon, don’t hesitate to ask me some more, and send me your feedbacks
.
Enjoy MIDI Mapping !
